Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:
Saturday, Oct. 31: At 3:33 am a deputy assisted the Boone County sheriff’s office with a single vehicle accident that occurred approximately one mile into Boone county on County Road E-18 (130th St. At 9:48 am, a deputy was dispatched to E. Main St and 12th St in Grand Junction for a two vehicle accident. A 2003 Pontiac Grand Am being driven by Kimber Sue Murphy, 25, of Grand Junction was eastbound on Main St when she encountered a 1999 K1500 Chevrolet Silverado pickup being driven by Parker Louis Stoneburner, 16, of Ogden, stopped in the roadway with no turn signal activated. Stoneburner then began to turn left into the path of Murphy. The Murphy vehicle sustained an estimated $1,500 in damage. There was little damage to the Stoneburner pickup but Stonburner was issued a citation for unsafe turn or failure to give signal.
At 11 am, a deputy was advised of an act of road rage that occurred between two male adults at the intersection of Highway, 30 and 4. The incident is under investigation by the sheriff’s office. At 12:37 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 400 block of W. Hager St in Grand Junction to investigate criminal mischief to a window. At 2:25 pm a deputy was dispatched to a reported two vehicle accident on County Road N-58 (A Ave) and County Road E-63 (330th St) in Willow Township. Ralph Donald Baugher, 68, of Guthrie Center was northbound on N-58 and had stopped at the stop sign and continued north to cross E-63 when his vehicle was struck by an eastbound 2014 Ford pickup being driven by John Leo Irlbeck, 55, of Audubon. No injuries were reported to either driver. Baugher was cited for failure to obey a stop sign and failure to yield right of way at a controlled intersection. Damage to Irlbeck’s pickup truck was estimated to be $14,000. Damage to Baugher’s 2003 Toyota Tacoma was estimated to be $5,500.
Friday, Oct. 30: At 2:20 am a deputy was advised of a car-deer accident that occurred on Highway 30 near County Road P-14 ( J Ave) west of Jefferson and the driver continued on to the Kum & Go in Jefferson. The deputy provided the driver with an accident report to be filled out and sent to the state. At 12:11 pm a deputy and the sheriff were dispatched for a two vehicle accident that occurred at the gravel road intersection of 280th Street and I Ave in Jackson Township. An empty Greene County Community School District bus that was being driven by Toresa Michelle Beyers, 40, of Churdan, was eastbound on 280th St and entering the intersection with I Ave, when the bus was struck by a north bound semi-tractor/grain trailer being driven by Matthew Joe Hofbauer, 33, of Coon Rapids. The impact pushed the bus into the northeast corner of the intersection, with the bus landing on its driver’s side and Beyers escaping through the top escape hatch. The semi-tractor and grain trailer that is owned by Gary Fell of Bayard, and driven by Hofbauer, also entered the northeast corner of the intersection and struck a tree before coming to rest near the school bus. No injuries were reported by either driver. The 2007 bus was estimated to be a total loss and Beyers was issued a citation for failure to yield to a Vehicle on the right. Damage to the 1995 Peterbilt semi-tractor was estimated to be $15,000. Matthew Hofbauer was issued citations for no valid commercial driver’s license and driving while license under suspension.
Thursday, Oct. 29: At 7:10 am a deputy and the sheriff were dispatched to the 1600 block of Neola Ave in Grant Township to investigate the disappearance of a juvenile female. It was later determined that she was safe and with her biological father in Minnesota. At 5:08 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction to investigate the report of someone discharging a BB or pellet gun at animals. At 9:57 pm, a deputy was dispatched to the 2400 block of Highway 4 in Franklin Township for a vehicle that was disabled due to hitting a deer north of Jefferson. A 2012 Hyundai being driven by Payal Patel of Pinckneyville, IL, sustained major damage estimated to be $10,000. Patel was not injured in the accident.
Wednesday, Oct. 28: At 10:31 am, a deputy spoke with several youth at the Greene County Intermediate School in Grand Junction about threats made against each other and bullying. At 4:47 pm a deputy was advised of a careless driver that had passed to the right of a vehicle while that vehicle was trying to make a right turn at the intersection of County Road P-29 (N Ave) and 110th St in Dawson Township. The vehicle and the driver were located in Calhoun County.
Tuesday, Oct. 27: At 4:27 pm, a deputy is investigating a harassment concern involving several male fourth graders on the Rippey bus. At 5:47 pm a deputy was advised by a West Central Cooperative employee of an anhydrous tank that was leaking vapor at the Grand Junction facility. He advised that the tank will be repaired on Wednesday.
Monday, Oct. 26: At 7:53 am, a deputy was dispatched to 340th Street and County Road P-46 (V Ave) in Washington Township to investigate a reported two vehicle accident. Robert Eric Muir, 50, of rural Rippey, was eastbound on 340th St and had stopped to check some livestock along the roadway. Muir began backing his 20012 Ford F 250 and struck a 2004 Chrysler Sebring being driven by Sherilyn Kay Dunlap, 36, of Perry, that was also eastbound on 340th St. Damage to the Dunlap vehicle was estimated to be $5,500 and Dunlap was cited for failure to provide proof of security against liability. The Muir pickup sustained an estimated $3,500 in damages and Muir was issued a citation for unsafe backing. No injuries were reported and both vehicles drove from the scene. At 10:52 am, a deputy was dispatched to the McMahon Access boat ramp on the Raccoon River in Jackson Township to investigate the report of illegal dumping. At 11:13 am, a deputy was dispatched to the 2400 block of County Road P-46 in Washington Township to investigate a burglary and theft of personal property from a farm building site. At 9:13 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson police department with trying to locate a pickup truck that was stolen from the Hy-Vee parking lot in Jefferson and later recovered in a high speed chase in Dallas County. A male subject was arrested at the scene by Dallas County authorities.
Sunday, Oct. 25: At 5:58 am, a deputy assisted a JPD officer with trying to locate a reported stolen car that was taken from the 300 block of E. Monroe St in Jefferson. At 6:08 am, a deputy was advised of cattle on the roadway at 182nd Street, east of County Road N-65 (D Ave) in Kendrick Township. Several cattle owners were advised of the situation. At 3:03 pm a deputy was advised of a loaded farm wagon that had broken a wheel axle on County Road E-53 (250th St) near D Ave in Scranton Township. The roadway was closed to traffic while the corn was transferred to another truck.
Saturday, Oct. 24: At 11:44 am, two Greene County deputies investigated a reported sexual assault case in the 400 block of Madison St in Scranton. Later in the evening four members of the Greene County sheriff’s office executed a search warrant on that address and subsequently arrested Anthony Michael Grife, 22, of Scranton for three counts of sexual abuse- second degree (Class B felony), sexual exploitation of a minor – cause to engage in act (Class C felony), sexual exploitation of a minor- promote film, (Class D felony), lascivious acts with a child – fondle or touch (Class C felony) and lascivious conduct with a minor (serious misdemeanor)*. At 6:58 pm, a deputy investigated a non-reportable car-deer accident that occurred on Highway 30 near County Road P-14 (J Ave) west of Jefferson. Minor damage was caused to a vehicle owned and being driven by Christena Lynn Miller of Carroll. At 8:20 pm the chief deputy sheriff investigated the report of a stop sign that had been struck and damaged in Churdan. The sign was struck but still visible to the motorists.
Friday, Oct. 23: At 3:37 pm two deputies, personnel from the Greene County Emergency Medical Services and the Jefferson fire department responded to a single vehicle roll-over accident on Highway 4 at 310th St in Franklin Township. Donna Rose Blair of Jefferson was northbound on Highway 4 when she lost control of her 2009 Nissan Versa and it entered the west ditch, rolling and coming to rest on the passenger side. Blair was not injured but her vehicle sustained major damage. At 4:49 pm dispatchers at the Greene County Law Enforcement Center were advised of a damaged power pole on County Road P-30 (Quest Ave) near 320th St in Franklin Township. Midland Power Cooperative was informed of the situation.
Thursday, Oct. 22: At 5:51 am, a deputy was dispatched to a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near Orchard Ave east of Jefferson. Deannda Diane Lopez, 50, of Jefferson was eastbound on Highway 30 when a deer ran onto the roadway and was struck by the Lopez vehicle. Lopez was not injured but her 2003 GMC Envoy sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene. At 3:09 pm a deputy was asked to locate a small dog that had been struck by a vehicle in the 100 block of W. Percival St in Grand Junction. The owner was located and told the location of the deceased dog.
Wednesday, Oct. 21: At 1:07 am a deputy, while on routine patrol, initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle at the intersection of Highways 30 and 4. After a field interview and investigation, the deputy subsequently arrested Kevin Eugene Miller, 49, of Boone for possession of a controlled substance, marijuana – second offense serious misdemeanor) and possession of drug paraphernalia (simple misdemeanor)*. At 3:34 pm the chief deputy sheriff was dispatched to the 1600 block of M Ave in Jackson Township for a minor two vehicle accident. Christine Rae Exline, 40, of Jefferson, was driving on M Ave when she crested a hill and struck the back of a parked pickup truck owned by Adam Smith of Jefferson. No injuries were reported and damage to each vehicle estimated to be $1,000. At 7:42 pm a deputy was dispatched to assist a Carroll County deputy with an assault case in Ralston.
Tuesday, Oct. 20: At 4:30 pm, a deputy assisted the JPD in locating a distraught male subject.
Monday, Oct. 19: At 9:18 am, a deputy, the chief deputy sheriff and the Scranton fire department responded to a corn stalk baler on fire in a farm field in the 700 block of Highway 30 east of Scranton. The baler, which is owned by John McCormick, was estimated to be a total loss. The deputies shut down Highway 30 for a short time due to thick smoke lowering visibility. At 3:04 pm a deputy on a traffic stop noticed another vehicle pass him and the deputy was aware that the driver was barred from driving. The vehicle sped away and traveled west on 250th St with the deputy in pursuit. The vehicle eventually stopped at a driveway 1600 block of T Ave in Junction Township. Taken into custody was Jonathan Dale Laue, 38, of Grand Junction for driving while barred with additional charges pending*.
Sunday, Oct. 18: At 2:54 am a deputy assisted a Jefferson police officer while the officer was on another call with responding to a burglary and theft call in the 800 block of W. South Street in Jefferson. At 4:26 am a deputy initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle driving erratically on highway 30 near County Road P-33 (S Ave) west of Grand Junction and subsequently arrested Jacob Benjamin Brown, 23, of Lewis for operating while intoxicated – second offense and driving on the wrong side of a two way highway*. At 7:40 pm a deputy was assisted by a JPD officer and an Iowa State Patrol officer with a one vehicle accident near W. Wall St and N. Grimmell Road in Jefferson.
Saturday, Oct. 17: At 10:18 am several deputies were dispatched to the 2000 block of Highway 4 (Neola Ave) in Franklin Township to investigate a trespassing concern. The deputy and the chief deputy sheriff advised the male subject to stay clear of the property and not to harass others in the neighborhood. At 1:21 pm a deputy was dispatched to the Sparky’s One Stop in Rippey for a possible harassment concern. At 1:35 pm the Jefferson fire department and a deputy responded to a small field fire on 320th St near K Ave in Greenbrier Township. The fire was extinguished quickly with little crop damage. At 5:05 pm a deputy was dispatched for the report of the illegal dumping of household furniture at the intersection of 330th St and W Ave in Washington Township. At 6:50 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 400 block of Howard Street in Rippey to investigate criminal mischief to the paint on a vehicle. At 8:20 pm a deputy was out of position and unable to assist with a high speed vehicle chase on County Road N-58 (A Ave) involving Carroll County deputies. The male was taken into custody by Carroll County Deputies.
Friday, Oct. 16: At 9:48 am, a deputy was dispatched to the 400 block of South 15th St in Grand Junction to investigate a trespassing and theft concern. At 10:52 am a deputy was dispatched to McMahon Access in Jackson Township to investigate the report of the illegal dumping of yard waste and discarded housing materials.
Thursday, Oct. 15: At 8:44 am a deputy and a JPD officer investigated a physical altercation between two juvenile youth that occurred in Jefferson while the youth were waiting to load the shuttle buses for transport to the Greene County Intermediate School in Grand Junction. At 10:34 pm a deputy assisted a Jefferson Police Officer with a call in the 100 block of East Washington St in Jefferson.
Wednesday, Oct. 14: At 6:34 am a deputy was dispatched to a minor hit and run accident on Highway 30 near the Casey’s General Store in Grand Junction. No report was needed. At 2:32 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 600 block of Highway 30 west of Scranton for the report of an ATV 4-wheeler trespassing on private property. The deputy determined that the ATV and the driver were taking soil samples and had permission to be on the property.
Tuesday, Oct. 13: At 9:09 am a deputy assisted a Harlan police officer with trying to locate a runaway juvenile female who may be in Greene County. At 10 am the chief deputy sheriff assisted the Greene County jail administrator with charging a female that tried to smuggle contraband into the jail for an inmate. At 4 pm a deputy was advised that a male subject found a bicycle in the ditch at County Road E-53 (230th) Street and T Ave west of Grand Junction.
Monday, Oct. 12: At 12:51 pm a deputy agreed to assist the Department of Human Services with investigating a reported sexual assault. At 2:28 pm the sheriff and four units from the Jefferson fire department responded to a farm field fire in the 900 block of 300th St in Greenbrier Township. The fire consumed several acres of already combined field stubble, with no loss of farm equipment. At 3:58 pm a deputy investigated the illegal dumping of household furniture in the ditch on W Ave south of Rippey. At 7:25 pm a deputy was dispatched to the Casey’s General Store in Grand Junction to investigate the theft of a shelf product. The deputy was given the vehicle plate information and will be contacting the owner.
Sunday, Oct. 11: At 2:48 pm a deputy was out of position and unable to respond to several vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed entering Greene County from Boone County on County Road E-18 (130th St). At 4:26 pm a deputy responded to a reported car-deer accident in which the driver stated she was going to continue on, but the deer was in the roadway on C Ave and 167th St in Kendrick Township. The deputy removed the deer carcass from the roadway. At 8:29 pm a deputy assisted JPD officers with a domestic call at the Redwood Motel.
Saturday, Oct. 10: At 10:18 am, a deputy assisted the Department of Human Services with locating and placing three juvenile children in protective custody. At 2:30 pm, a deputy was dispatched to a fully loaded grain truck that had backed into the ditch on County Road P-30 (Quaker Ave) near 255th St in Grant Township. The truck was removed without incident. At 6:15 pm, a deputy was dispatched to the 100 block of 8th St in Grand Junction to investigate a hit and run accident. A fifth wheel camper that is owned by Jeffery Lynn Etherton of that address was backed into by an unknown vehicle.
Friday, Oct. 9: At 3:09 am a deputy was advised of a possible intoxicated driver driving a white Mercury Sable at the Janco Motel in Grand Junction. Upon Kersey’s arrival the vehicle was located parked at the motel. As the deputy was checking the hotel lobby, the vehicle left the parking lot and proceeded eastbound on Highway 30 at a high rate of speed. The deputy pursued the vehicle into Boone County where a Boone County deputy also joined the pursuit eastbound at speeds up to 130 mph. Boone County sheriff’s deputies and Boone police officers deployed stop sticks on Highway 30 at Boone. The vehicle continued eastbound with blown tires until going into the ditch west of Highway 17. Arrested and taken into custody at the scene was Mathew L. Ehlers, 28, of Henderson, KY, for eluding, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and theft- second degree*, as the car was stolen from the Farner Bocken Company of Carroll. Sheriff Steve Haupert identified the deputy as Dave Kersey. At 8:09 am a deputy was dispatched to a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near L Ave west of Jefferson. Joy DeeAnn Fox, 61, of Jefferson was westbound on Highway 30 when a deer ran onto the roadway and was struck by the Fox vehicle. Joy Fox was not injured but her 2005 Toyota Camry sustained and estimated $2,000 in damages. At 9:38 am a deputy dispatched to the 500 block of North 18th St in Grand Junction to investigate criminal mischief to the interior of a vehicle and the theft of several items. At 11:52 am a deputy assisted a Boone County deputy with locating a Grand Junction resident involving a Boone County case. At 2:56 pm two Greene County deputies, Greene County EMS and the Jefferson fire department all assisted the Iowa State Patrol with a two vehicle accident involving a pickup rear-ending a semi-tractor trailer at the intersection of Quest Ave and County Road P-30 (320th St) in Franklin Township. Christina Elizabeth Henning, 68, of rural Jefferson, was northbound on P-30 when she ran into the back of a semi-tractor grain trailer that was attempting to turn left onto 320th St. Henning was transported to the Greene County Medical Center with no life threatening injuries. The semi is owned by Freeman Brothers Farms, and was being driven by Douglas Lyle Plath, 67, of Ogden. Plath was not injured, but both the semi and the Henning’s 2014 Ford F150 pickup truck were reported to be total losses. Henning was cited for failure to stop in assured clear distance. The accident was investigated by the Iowa State Patrol.
Thursday, Oct. 8: At 8:11 am a deputy was dispatched to remove a deer carcass from along the roadway on Highway 30 at Kirkwood Ave west of Jefferson. At 9:40 am the chief deputy sheriff and his K-9 Leo, assisted the Boone County sheriff’s office K-9 unit with a walk through at the Ogden High School. At 10:18 am a deputy was dispatched for the report of downed electrical power lines at a residence in the 1300 block of County Road P-46 (W Ave) in Junction Township. The deputy stayed on scene until Alliant Energy secured the power lines. At 7:14 pm, a deputy was dispatched to the 2300 block of W Ave in Washington Township to investigate the intentional shooting of a cow in a pasture. At 11:36 pm a deputy was assisted by two JPD officers and a Boone County deputy in locating a male subject that was reported to have been involved in a domestic assault in Grand Junction. The male subject was ultimately located at the Redwood Motel in Jefferson. After an investigation, Weldon Dudley Roberts, 52, of South Carolina was arrested and taken into custody by a JPD officer on two outstanding warrants from Walton County, GA.
Wednesday, Oct. 7: At 8:43 am the sheriff responded to cattle on the roadway south of Jefferson and north of the Raccoon River bridge. The six head of cattle were placed back into the pasture. Three other drivers stopped to assist with the roundup. At 4:35 pm a deputy learned of a driver who passed a stopped Paton-Churdan school bus with its emergency flashers and stop arm activated. The deputy will cite the driver.
Tuesday, Oct. 6: At 1:29 pm a deputy was advised by a resident in the 600 block of County Road N-65 (D Ave) of receiving a scam phone call from someone pretending to be from the IRS. He was advised that many persons in Greene County have also received the same phone call and go to the Iowa Attorney General’s website and report the call. At 5:39 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 600 block of 4th St in Rippey for a reported domestic assault. After an investigation the deputy arrested Becky Sue Kinyon, 47, of Boone for domestic abuse assault – first offense (two counts)*.
Monday, Oct. 5: At 12:18 am a deputy responded to a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near Orchard Ave east of Jefferson. There was no damage to the pickup and no state report was needed. The deer was never located. At 5:39 am a deputy was dispatched to remove a deer carcass from the roadway on Highway 30 at L Ave west of Jefferson. At 11:51 am the chief deputy sheriff assisted a Jefferson police officer with a call and the arrest of a female in the 500 block of N. Vine St in Jefferson. At 5:25 pm three members of the Greene County sheriff’s office executed a search warrant on a Scranton residence at 900 Grant St and arrested Randy Allen Gray Jr, 36, of Scranton on warrants for the violation of probation (two counts) and driving while barred*. Also taken into custody at that time was Ann Catherine Lehnhoff, 38, of Scranton for accessory to a misdemeanor*. At 9 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 900 block of E. Highway 30 in Grand Junction to investigate the theft of money from a wallet.
Sunday, Oct. 4: At 10am a deputy towed a vehicle from the roadway in the 800 block of 310th St in Greenbrier Township. The vehicle was void of any registration and vehicle plate identification. At 11:05 am a deputy was asked to assist a Des Moines police officer with a possible assault that occurred in Grand Junction. At 2:21 pm a deputy was advised of the theft of an iPhone 4 from a residence in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction.
Saturday, Oct. 3: At 6:20 am a deputy was dispatched to a semi-tractor grain trailer in the ditch on A Ave just north of 320th St in Willow Township. The semi was actually on the Carroll County side and covered by the Carroll County sheriff’s office. At 6:29 am a deputy was asked to assist the Carroll County sheriff’s office with checking on a Scranton resident that was involved in the previous traffic accident in Carroll County. At 11:46 am a deputy was dispatched to a two vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of Highway 30 and Pioneer Ave east of Jefferson. Emily Marie Most, 18, of Jefferson was eastbound on Highway 30 and attempting to turn north onto Pioneer Ave when Mikayla Jo Hockenberry 20, of Guthrie Center failed to stop and rear-ended the Most vehicle. No injuries were reported and the air bags in both vehicles deployed. Hockenberry was cited for failure to maintain control. Damage to the Most’s 2002 Ford Taurus was estimated to be $800. Damage to the Hockenberry’s 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier was estimated to be $7,500.
Friday, Oct. 2: At 6:41 am five members of the Greene County sheriff’s office executed a search warrant at a residence in the 2400 block of 180th St in Junction Township. Items were seized and the investigation is ongoing at this time. At 4:53 pm a deputy responded to the 1000 block of Main Street E. in Grand Junction and arrested Kurtis Bradley Hicks Langfitt, 25, of Dana on three outstanding Greene County warrants.
Thursday, Oct. 1: At 8:37 am, a deputy was dispatched for the report of a deer carcass on the roadway on 237th St west of Jefferson.
*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
